A students’ rights group says “everybody” at a California junior college should have known it was wrong to block a student from handing out copies of the U.S. Constitution on campus.
Robert Van Tuinen, a student at Modesto Junior College, was handing out copies of the Constitution on Constitution Day (September 17) but was stopped by a school security guard. After hearing the student also was trying to start a chapter of Young Americans for Liberty (YAL), school officials echoed the security guard’s message and told Van Tuinen he needed to fill out the proper paperwork to hand out material, obtain prior permission, and then wait for his turn.
Alyssa Farah, YAL’s director of communications, says while Van Tuinen tried to calmly explain to officials that it was his First Amendment right to hand out the Constitution, they would have none of it. “School administrators and [staff] just were not receptive and ended up disallowing him to even speak within the free-speech zone,” she explains.
The “free-speech zone” at Modesto Junior College is a small, cemented area between the administration building and the student center (see map). Van Tuinen was standing near, but not directly on, the cemented area. Farah Farah explains that many campuses established free-speech zones during the volatile Vietnam protests of the ’60s for reasons which she argues are no longer relevant. “But now as they’re interpreted, it’s in no way really any sort of safety issue or concern for students who are living on college campuses,” she tells OneNewsNow. “It literally just comes down to trying to bar certain messages from being heard.” In addition to Modesto Junior College, Farah reports YAL activists at the College of Central Florida and at Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin were also prevented from handing out literature on Constitution Day.

This is beyond despicable. There is an ever growing tyranny in our society. This young man had his first amendment rights violated. He was peacefully assembled, exercising free speech, and they had absolutely no right to prevent him from handing out copies of our own Constitution.
If this school is given any federal dollars, this should immediately end. Schools that will not allow for the student body to utilize their rights, do not deserve to get taxpayer money. They should not be able to participate in student loan programs or get any funds from the government.
I would recommend that everyone write the school and your congressman to express your outrage at this incident. Let them feel the heat.
